Hasta Eco – The Agriculture of the Future that Binds Carbon and Fosters Life
At Hasta Gård, we have developed a regenerative cultivation system that not only reduces climate impact – it also sequesters carbon dioxide. By combining the principles of ecological farming with innovative techniques in biochar, microbiology, and circular cycles, our system can bind between 2 and 3 tons of CO₂ per hectare per year. This represents a clear shift from agriculture as a climate burden to a climate solution.
We enrich the soil through intercropping, where multiple plants work together to build a rich microbiome. This creates long-term fertility without requiring synthetic fertilizers. Residual biomass from cultivation is fermented and returned as nutrient-rich compost, closing the loop and building the soil's carbon reserves.
We also add biochar, which acts as a carbon sink in the soil – a stable form of carbon that can be stored for hundreds of years. Biochar improves soil structure, retains moisture, and promotes microbial life.
An important part of our system is the use of natural fertilizer pre-treated with microorganisms. This treatment reduces odor and greenhouse gas emissions while making nutrients more available to plants. Furthermore, it fosters an environment where earthworms thrive – these are key organisms in a healthy ecosystem, as they mix the soil, increase oxygen availability, and improve drainage.
